SQL Server Standard is available under the Server + CAL model. Licensing SQL Server Per Server + CAL Model If you choose this option, the number of licenses required equals the number of physical cores on the server multiplied by the applicable core factor located in the SQL Server Core Factor Table.

To license a physical server properly, you must license all the cores on the server, with a minimum of four core licenses required for each physical processor in the server. Those licenses count toward the minimum requirement of four licenses per virtual OSE.For Example: If any of these virtual cores is at any time mapped to more than one hardware thread, you will need a license for each additional hardware thread mapped to that virtual core. Virtual Machine To license a virtual machine with core licenses, you can simply buy a core license for each virtual core allocated to the virtual machine (minimum of 4 cores).With the Per Core model you have the following two options:
A minimum of 4 Core licenses is required per virtual or physical processor, however all cores being allocated to SQL Server require a core license. The Per Core model allows access for an unlimited number of users or devices to connect from either inside or outside an organization’s firewall without the need for a CAL. Therefore, it is good to compare both licensing models before making a purchase, especially if you have over 30 users. This means even if only 10 out of 25 users access the server at any given time, you would still need 25 CALs.įor the sake of comparison, one SQL Server Standard with 30 User CALs costs about the same as a SQL Server Standard for 4 Cores. One CAL is required per EVERY user or device it is NOT based upon concurrent connections. If you have an inward facing connection such as an internal application, and you know the exact number of users and administrators accessing that application, then the Server + CALs model will probably be the best bet for you, assuming you don’t have an excessive number of users accessing it.
If you are using SQL Server on an outward facing connection such as a website, have an internal facing application where you cannot count the number of users, or have an excessive number of users, then you will most likely want to license per core. Therefore one of the first questions we ask customers is how they plan on using SQL Server. Microsoft SQL Server is either licensed by Core or Server/CAL. SQL Server Standard may be licensed either by the Server + CAL licensing model or the Per Core model, but the Enterprise edition must be licensed per core. This is the number one misconception we hear from our customers. Note: SQL Server Developer is licensed per user and is not intended for use on a production server.
